I pledge my support for creating communities that welcome refugees. We must do more to provide the help that new Kiwis need to resettle after fleeing war and persecution. An essential step is for the current pilot programme for community sponsorship of refugees to become an annual programme.

An innovative programme in New Zealand is opening the door for more refugees to rebuild their lives in safe places. It complements existing government-led refugee quota programmes, but it’s communities that offer the help. Language lessons, help finding a home, advice on putting together a CV and showing how to use public transport. These are just some of the ways individual people, organisations and businesses in New Zealand will welcome newcomers and help them resettle.

But, the New Zealand Government hasn’t decided whether to continue the initiative after its one-year pilot.

By taking the pledge, and helping us reach our goal of 10,000 pledges, together we can show the Government the support and potential community sponsorship has across New Zealand.

By taking the pledge, we can do our bit to address the refugee crisis by ensuring the programme continues, and more refugees can be welcomed here in New Zealand.
